SINGAPORE - A Singapore court sentenced two Lebanese football referees on Monday to jail time already served, with a third to be sentenced Tuesday, after all three pleaded guilty to accepting sex bribes from a global crime syndicate believed to have been responsible for fixing hundreds of soccer matches around the world. The sentencing comes more than a year after the trio accepted sex bribes from prostitutes arranged by Singaporean businessman Eric Ding Si Yang, 31, in exchange for fixing the April 3 Asian Football Confederation Cup match. Assistant referees Ali Eid, 33, Abdallah Taleb, 37, and referee Ali Sabbagh, 34, were abruptly pulled off the field and have been detained in Singapores Changi Prison ever since. All three were denied bail. In sentencing Eid and Taleb, Judge Low Wee Ping said: "The fact that you are international officials in my view, is already an aggravating factor." But Low acknowledged the "strong mitigating factor" that both men had pleaded guilty and said they could be released later Monday or Tuesday due to good behaviour and time served while awaiting their sentence. The state prosecutor said Sabbagh was the "most culpable" because he had direct contact with match-fixer Eric Ding, whom he met in Beirut. Low added he needed time to consider Sabbaghs sentence. Ding was charged with corruption in May and was granted bail of 150,000 Singapore dollars ($119,000). State prosecutors also indicated "a clear international dimension" to the offences committed by the trio. Despite its immense wealth, Singapore has been hit by football corruption fueled by illicit gambling syndicates. Last May, Singapore authorities charged a top referee and a former Malaysia international with conspiring to fix a Malaysian Super League match. In another closely watched case, Singapore national Wilson Raj Perumal, who had ties to Asian and Eastern European gambling syndicates, was jailed in Finland for match-fixing. Serial match-fixer Dan Tan Seet Eng, accused of heading a crime syndicate that made millions of dollars betting on rigged Italian matches has been reportedly assisting the authorities in ongoing investigations. Leicestershire 519 (Pettini 117, Cosgrove 111, Eckersley 107, Raine 64) and 292 for 6 dec (Horton 99, Robson 84, Zaib 5-148) drew with Northamptonshire 397 for 7 dec (Newton 202*, Keogh 50) and 118 for 1 (Wakely 53*) Scorecard Northamptonshire batted out for a draw on the final afternoon at Wantage Road after Leicestershire declined to offer a reasonable chase. They set the home side 415 to win in 51 overs, so Northants just played out time for a 10-point draw on 118 for 1.Leicestershires 11 points keeps them in touch with the promotion race, with Division Two leaders Essex to play next week at Grace Road.Hope were raised of a last day run chase after Leicestershire resumed 49 without loss, 177 ahead but they made only steady progress in the morning session. Even 319 in front by lunch with 63 overs remaining, they felt the need to add a few more into the afternoon before eventually declaring 292 for 6.Northants might have hoped for a chase to tune up for Thursdays 50-over quarter-final at home to Surrey but the size of the task left them with no option but to bat out for a draw, which they did only for the loss of Rob Newton, bowled by Ben Raine for 22.The day began full of intrigue but a tedious morning session ensued. Saif Zaib, with his left-arm spin, was the onlly beneficiary, picking up his maiden first-class wicket by having Angus Robson caught at midwicket for 84.ddddddddddddHe also denied Paul Horton a third century of the season by a single run, sharply held by Rory Kleinveldt at slip.Zaib went on to complete a five-wicket haul as Mark Cosgrove slapped a full toss to extra-cover shortly after lunch, Mark Pettini was stumped by Rob Keogh - who took the gloves to allow David Murphy to bowl - and Neil Dexter was lbw. Zaib finished with 5 for 148 having bowled 26 overs unchanged from the Lynn Wilson End.It was the only noteworthy performance of the day. It was thought a run chase would be agreed after Northants called in their first innings 122 behind on the third evening. But there was no sign of a charge from Leicestershire. Only in the final overs of the morning session were shots played with any great intent, Horton and Robson swinging Zaib over long-on.Northants only resorted to declaration bowling later in the morning when Alex Wakely and Adam Rossington sent down overs. Murphy also removed the pads and picked up a maiden first-class wicket when Ned Eckersley lifted to Wakely at long-on. ' ' '
