fourth in the East and until a loss last month

Yorkshire 281 (Berg 6-56) and 69 for 1 lead Hampshire 222 (Ervine 80, Vince 60, Brooks 5-53, Sidebottom 3-45) by 128 runsScorecard It is on days like this that it becomes apparent quite how good Yorkshire are. While up in Headingley five White Rose players, including three bowlers, appeared for England in an ODI against Pakistan, down in Southampton, Yorkshire scrapped furiously in the field on a warm afternoon to turn a crucial match back in their favour. How many of Yorkshires absent England players would be playing in this match were they available is a matter of debate but if nothing else it is revealing as to the strength in depth and quality at the club that without them they are still able to not only be competitive but successful.Hampshire have played well for a lot of this match, they have definitely had the better of the conditions and at one point they were trailing by 82 runs with six first-innings wickets in hand, yet they ended the second day 128 behind and requiring a dramatic turnaround to stave off defeat. If Yorkshire do end up winning a historic third consecutive Championship title, then they may well come to look back on this second afternoon in Southampton as another significant moment in a growing collection of significant moments.A slow over rate meant that after two hours in the sunshine the afternoon session was extended. Yorkshires ageing team did not wilt though. Ryan Sidebottom, in his nineteenth county season - red face, sweat-laden hair, grimace and all - was the man who turned the match. It was going to take a special ball to remove Sean Ervine, who, fresh from centuries in both innings in Taunton had looked in splendid form all afternoon, and a special ball it was. On that in-between length it tempted the left-handed Ervine forwards but it shaped beautifully away before exploding off the pitch like a firecracker to take the shoulder edge of Ervines bat to be caught behind. Sidebottom charged away in celebration; he knew the importance of the wicket.A score of 199 for 4 had become 199 for 5 and by the time Lewis McManus had tamely chipped to midwicket off the bowling of Jack Brooks and Sidebottom found Ryan McLarens edge with a lovely away-swinger, a session that had been extended was ended early with Hampshire seven down. It took just half an hour after tea for Yorkshire to take the final three wickets, all of them falling to Brooks who completed his five wicket-haul. Yorkshire had taken 6 for 23 leaving them with a first-innings lead of 59.The brilliance of Yorkshires bowling extended beyond the numbers. To appreciate the effort behind the late afternoon collapse it is necessary to understand what came before. With the clouds high, the air thin and the sun out this was far less of a bowling day than the first, yet Yorkshire drew on all their experience and bowled superbly regardless and never really let Hampshire get away. Both Brooks and Sidebottom naturally swung the new ball, but less than Hampshire did on day one. Instead they built pressure by bowling immaculate lines, forcing the batsmen to play at the ball, and their stump-to-stump line only required a hint of swing to beat the bat and bring lbw into play. Both Will Smith and Tom Alsop fell in this manner, beaten by lateral movement. Jimmy Adams, clipping to midwicket like McManus after him, would have been disappointed with the manner of his dismissal. The major partnership of the day was between Ervine and James Vince, as they put on 107 enterprising runs for the fourth wicket either side of the lunch interval. It was during this partnership that Yorkshires fortitude was revealed. Both Ervine and Vince played beautifully. Ervine crunching boundaries, Vince caressing them. Yet as good as they looked and as unhelpful as the conditions were after lunch a wicket never looked far away simply because Yorkshire didnt relent; bad balls were rare and good balls, somehow, kept coming.Just as Vince brought up his second 50-plus score of the season - his first incidentally was a century against Yorkshire in April - and just as he was beginning to look like the player he has been a spectre of since being called up to the Test side, Tim Bresnan tempted a shot and the edge was taken at second slip.It must have all felt painfully familiar to Vince. Not for the first time this summer he had played at a ball that he didnt need to play at. Not for the first time this summer he had played a good innings that ultimately wasnt good enough. Not for the first time this summer, for both Hampshire as well as Vince, the opposition were just too good. Raul Mondesi Jersey . Tests earlier this week revealed a Grade 2 left hamstring strain for Sabathia, who was hurt in last Fridays start against San Francisco. Its an injury that will require about eight weeks to heal. He finished a disappointing campaign just 14-13 with a career-worst 4. Don Larsen Jersey Large . -- Arizona raced out to a big lead and did not back off, hitting the accelerator instead. There was no hesitation from the 40th-ranked Pospisil, from Vernon, B.C., who admitted that he cut back on his training sessions over the last few days to conserve energy as the long ATP season finishes next week at the Paris Masters.TORONTO -- The camera caught Danny Koevermans face when he stood on the sideline, waiting to enter a game for the first time in nearly a year. It was unmistakable joy. "Goosebumps," Koevermans said of that moment. "Just a great feeling. The standing ovation from the fans. What Id been working for, and I was just so happy to finally be coming back on the pitch." The big Dutch striker made his season debut for Toronto FC on June 1, subbing into the game against visiting Philadelphia in the 86th minute in his first action since tearing his ACL last July. The 6-3 striker hasnt played since, sitting out Torontos 2-1 win over D.C. United last weekend that ended the teams 11-game winless streak. "Hopefully Ill get some more minutes in the coming weeks," Koevermans said at practice Friday. "Well see. Tomorrow in Houston maybe. You dont know." Toronto is in Houston on Saturday looking to put together back-to-back victories for the first time in nearly a year. Houston will be aiming to end their five game winless streak. Fans would love to see Koevermans back at full strength. The hard-charging forward was lethal in the air last season, and scored nine goals in 16 games before his injury dealt a huge blow to the team. TFC coach Ryan Nelsen said any player of Koevermans class "you want to get him on the field as much as you can." But its easier said than done to find minutes for Koevermans when Robert Earnshaw -- the teams leading scorer with six goals -- and Luis Silva have been playing well together. "And its just about getting the timing," Nelsen said. "An ACL injury, hes been away for close to a year now, so its not just going to fall into place just like that. Danny wants to get on the field but sometimes. . . the more he trains the more he gets used to it, the more he gets knocks, the better it is for him." Koevermans has made his home in Toronto since he was acquired in June of 2011 and did his rehab here. The 34-year-old said he never once doubted hed back playing at full strength. "The moment it happened, you just switch off, and switch on again to be back nine or 10 months later," Koeevermans said of his mindset.dddddddddddd Nelsen, who played his last game for Englands Queens Park Rangers in January before joining Toronto as coach, stayed late after practice to play small-sided games with Koevermans during the last few weeks of his recovery. "That was the best part of it, because youre back on the pitch. I love playing those games like theyre doing right now," Koevermans said, glancing over at a small-sided game Friday, featuring coaching staff and players who werent travelling to Houston. "I wish I was in there, because Ive missed a lot of months. The frustrating part is just to start, but when everything gets stronger, and gets better, thats the fun part, because you get to touch the ball again, run again, get some goals again. Thats the best part of it, and its only waiting for the comeback. "Maybe we could just sign (Nelsen), I think hes still fit," Koevermans added, laughing. Nelsen said he struggled in those games against Koevermans. "I was blowing a gasket even when I was marking (retired defender) Jimmy Brennan, let alone a player of Danny Koevermans class," Nelsen joked. Toronto -- 2-7-5 and ninth in the Eastern Conference -- faces a tough test at Houston. The Dynamo is 6-5-4 and fourth in the East and until a loss last month against Kansas City had gone a whopping 36 straight games at home without a loss. Toronto may be better prepared for the weather Saturday. Last year in Houston, Toronto let a 3-1 halftime lead disappear as they wilted in the 29 C heat that with the humidity felt closer to 39 C. The game ended 3-3. Saturdays temperature is expected to be about 34 C. The team practised in the hot sun at their training base in Downsview on Friday afternoon, with the temperature reaching about 26 C. "Guys like the heat. The hotter the better. More fun," Nelsen said -- but added Houston could still have an advantage. "I think (the Dynamo) are just used to it, so whether its freezing cold or boiling hot, you get used to the climate in those conditions, used to how the ball bounces, run of the green and all that fun stuff. Any homefield advantage is an advantage." ' ' '
