ANAHEIM, Calif. - Jason Vargas knows that whenever the Los Angeles Angels lineup puts up an eye-popping performance befitting all of its money and talent, their starting pitchers job becomes a whole lot easier. And though Vargas didnt need all the help he got Monday night, he thinks the Angels latest offensive barrage means smoother days ahead for an up-and-down club. Albert Pujols had an RBI double among his four hits, Josh Hamilton hit a two-run homer, and Los Angeles pounded out a season-high 21 hits in an 11-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Alberto Callaspo matched his career high with four hits, driving in two runs during the Angels seven-run sixth inning. Peter Bourjos had three hits as Los Angeles battered Aaron Harang (3-7) and the Seattle bullpen in its fourth victory in five games. The Angels made it comfortable for Vargas (6-4), who yielded four hits and recorded a season-high nine strikeouts in seven strong innings while beating his former teammates. "You definitely dont want to take the runs for granted," said Vargas, acquired from Seattle in an off-season trade. "We know were definitely capable of putting up some offence every night. This was a carry-over from what we did in the ninth inning (Sunday)." Indeed, the Angels picked up right where they left off with a five-run rally that fell just short in a 6-5 loss to the Yankees. Pujols, who struck out with the bases loaded to end it, had hits in his first four at-bats against Seattle. Howie Kendrick and Mike Trout drove in early runs as the Angels got a hit from all nine spots in their big-budget lineup for their biggest hit total since August 2009. Los Angeles has 67 hits and 36 runs in its last five games after its first 20-hit performance in a nine-inning game since 2008. "I dont know if were going to get it every night, but 21 hits is a good breakout game for us coming off a good ninth inning Sunday," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. Trout also scored his 200th career run in the sixth, reaching the milestone in just 249 games — the quickest major leaguer to the mark since 1940. Only seven players since 1916 reached 200 runs more quickly than last seasons AL Rookie of the Year, and five of those players are in the Hall of Fame, including Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams and Lloyd Waner. "It felt like what other teams have been doing to us lately, (but) tonight we came out swinging," Trout said. Erick Aybar and Chris Iannetta had run-scoring singles for the Angels during the sixth, and they both scored on Nick Franklins throwing error on Trouts bases-loaded grounder. Callaspo also had a two-run single in the sixth while emphatically snapping a 10-for-64 skid. Even Brendan Harris snapped an 0-for-24 skid with a pinch-hit single in the seventh. Los Angeles had its first 20-hit game since last Aug. 23 at Boston, and seven Angels drove in a run. Franklin hit an early two-run homer for Seattle in the opener of a four-game AL West series. The Angels pounded out eight hits and four runs in the first two innings against Harang, who threw a two-hitter against Houston in his previous start. Harang yielded 12 hits and four runs in five innings before the Angels beat up on Seattle relievers Carter Capps and Charlie Furbush in the sixth. "They have guys throughout their lineup that can run, and it changes the whole aspect of the game and changes the way you have to pitch to guys," Harang said. Kendrick, who has been batting around .500 in June, had an RBI double to right field in the first inning, scoring Hamilton. After Trouts long sacrifice fly brought home Callaspo in the second, Hamilton hit his two-run shot to the trees beyond centre field, where a leaping Michael Saunders got his glove on the ball, but couldnt haul it in. "They had quite a few hits in a short period of time, and (Harang) was fortunate to get out of there with just four runs," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. After Endy Chavez got the Mariners first hit, Franklin connected for his third homer. Vargas didnt allow another runner past first base, and the Angels put it out of reach while sending 12 batters to the plate in the sixth. But like Ive always said, you dont have to be defined by your mistakes. How you come back matters, too, and thats what New Yorks all about. He will be cut Saturday by a Yankees team pivoting to youth. The 41-year-old designated hitter isnt sure whether he will play again.A-Rod drove a 96 mph fastball from Chris Archer into the right-center field gap in the first inning, ending an 0-for-11 slide. Rodriguez then grounded out, struck out and bounced out again on the first pitch in his last at-bat. The 1-for-4 night left him with a .200 average, nine homers and 31 RBI in his 12th and final Yankees season. With the sellout crowd of 46,459 chanting We want A-Rod! Yankees manager Joe Girardi sent him to third base for the first time in 15 months at the start of the ninth inning as the organist played Thanks for Memory.Rodriguez had criticized Girardi for benching him for most of the past month. If this is the last time he plays, Girardi said softly, pausing for 10 seconds and sniffling as his voice cracked and his eyes teared, I wanted it to be something he never forgot.Girardi offered to leave him in the field for two outs, but Rodriguez opted to leave after Mikie Mahtooks leadoff strikeout. Fans applauded, many of whom never warmed to a player who in 2009 admitted using performance-enhancing drugs, then served a yearlong drug suspension in 2014.Rodriguez raised his cap and an arm before walking into the dugout, sitting down and holding a white towel to his face as he tried to hold back tears.`With all that Ive been through, and for them to show up on a night like tonight and show me that type love is something that Ill never forget. It was overwhelming, he said during a news conference, perfectly coifed in a gray suit and silver necktie.Dark clouds rolled in from the northwest as his ceremony began. Admitting to plenty of errors in a life that has included the 2009 World Series title, a divorce, celebrity girlfriends, high-stakes poker games and what seemed to be as many photos on tabloid fronts as backs, he leaves without establishing his own era. Rodriguez was a supporting actor in the Derek Jeter-Mariano Rivera epoch, and when the stars left the cast he could not carry the show.He has 696 home runs, fourth on the career list behind Barry Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714). But owner Hal Steinbrenner told him on Aug. 3 the end was at hand, and Rodriguez said last Sunday he had accepted an offer to play one final home game and then become a team adviser through 2017, tasked with mentoring young players. With all my screw-ups and how badly I acted, the fact that Im walking out the door, Hal wants me as part of the family, thats hitting 800 home runs for me, Rodriguez said.New York will owe him $7,103,825 for the rest of this year and $20 million for next, the final season of his $275 million, 10-year contract.Having seen his lights go down on Broadway, is Miami 2017 in his future? He has not said he is retiring.Im going to need a long nap and recover and I want to see where life takes me, he said, but right now I think I value wearing this uniform, and for me the Yankees pinstripes is enough.A 14-time All-Star and three-time AL MVP, A-Rod has a .295 batting average, 3,115 hits and his 2,086 RBI, second to Aarons 2,297 since RBI became an official statistic.
