LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska coach Mike Riley said he expects Michael Rose-Ivey to represent himself well when he meets next week with Gov. Pete Ricketts, who criticized Rose-Ivey and two other football players for kneeling during the national anthem last weekend. As Riley came off the practice field Wednesday night, he said it was awesome that the governor had agreed to sit down with the senior linebacker.Lets get the conversation started, Riley said, smiling. Michael will do great.Rose-Ivey, Mohamed Barry and DaiShon Neal each took a knee during the anthem before the game at Northwestern to protest police brutality and racial injustice. After Ricketts said on his weekly radio show Monday that the players anthem protest was disgraceful and disrespectful, Rose-Ivey tweeted at the governor requesting a meeting. Ricketts tweeted back Tuesday night that he would arrange a meeting as soon as possible.A day for the meeting is still to be determined. Rose-Ivey requested that it be next week so it wouldnt interfere with football game preparation. The Cornhuskers dont have a game on Oct. 8.Its unclear exactly what the governor and Rose-Ivey will discuss. Rose-Ivey was not available to the media on Wednesday, and Ricketts spokesman Taylor Gage said he didnt expect the governor to comment on the meeting until a firm date is set. Also Wednesday, university president Hank Bounds and chancellor Ronnie Green emailed students, faculty and staff to emphasize their support for the players exercise of their First Amendment rights in a peaceful demonstration.Rose-Ivey has said he and his family had received threatening and racially motivated comments on social media in response to their protest.I am saddened that the peaceful -- and by their intent respectful and prayer-centered -- actions of our students resulted in threats from a few individuals in public forums, Green wrote.Green added, While I fully recognize and appreciate that there are many who have strongly held views that this demonstration could have been achieved in a manner that did not conflate with the observance and allegiance to our national anthem, the fact remains that their personal choice to speak in this way is a protected right that we all are afforded by the Constitution. The anthem protest has drawn a gamut of reaction statewide. The players have said they were heartened by the number of supportive comments they received and appreciate the backing from university and athletic department leaders as well as Riley. But in addition to the criticism from Ricketts, they were accused of using poor judgment by Board of Regents members Hal Daub of Omaha and Jim Pillen of Columbus. Pillen played defensive back at Nebraska from 1976-78.In interviews with The Associated Press, neither Daub nor Pillen suggested disciplinary action should be taken against the three players. Daub disputed a Lincoln Journal Star report in which the newspaper quoted him as saying Rose-Ivey, Barry and Neal should be kicked off the team.American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska executive director Danielle Conrad praised the three players for expressing their views and said the ACLU also defends the right of people to disagree with the players protest. But she said its shocking that government leaders would assert government sanctions should be imposed to discipline these student athletes for their expression on critical racial justice issues.During the teams media availability on Monday, Rose-Ivey read a statement explaining the reasons why he, Barry and Neal joined San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick and other professional and amateur athletes who have kneeled or otherwise protested what they feel is unfair treatment of blacks in the United States.Ricketts, responding to a caller on his weekly radio show on Monday, said: Generations of men and women have died to give them that right to protest. I think the way they chose to protest was disgraceful and disrespectful.---Online:AP college football website: http://collegefootball.ap.org Nike MLB Jerseys .J. -- New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his left knee. NEW YORK -- A new era for the New York Yankees will continue unfolding Wednesday night, when the Subway Series shifts to Yankee Stadium as the Yankees host the New York Mets in the opener of a two-game series.Shortly after the Mets salvaged a split of the two-game series at Citi Field on Tuesday night with a 7-1 win over the Yankees, the Scranton Times reported that Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre catcher Gary Sanchez will be promoted to the Yankees in time to play Wednesday. While manager Joe Girardi refused to confirm or deny the report, the Scranton Times reported Sanchez was seen hugging teammates following Scranton/Wilkes-Barres game on Tuesday night. The promotion of Sanchez will be just the latest in a stunning series of moves that have transformed the Yankees from a middling wild card contender into a team in the midst of a full-on rebuild. The Yankees traded four key players -- outfielder Carlos Beltran, hard-throwing relief pitchers Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller and starting pitcher Ivan Nova -- in the week leading up to Mondays trade deadline.Should Sanchez start at catcher, he will form an all-rookie battery with right-hander Chad Green, who replaced Nova in the rotation. Green is scheduled to oppose Mets left-hander Steven Matz. The most recognizable (or infamous) Yankee player remains, but how much longer will Alex Rodriguez get to watch the youth movement take place?ESPNNewYork.com reported late Tuesday that the 41-year-old Rodriguez, who has started just once in the last 10 games and flew out as a pinch-hitter to end Tuesdays game, is not expected to be cut to make room for Sanchez. But everyone involved realizes Rodriguezs at-bats are growing sparser, if not his days in the pinstripes altogether. Rodriguez, who is four homers shy of 700 for his career, is owed $20 million next season in the final year of his contract.ddddddddddddWeve been looking for opportunities to get him into games, Girardi said Tuesday afternoon. Ill continue to look for ways. But it could mean (less playing time) because we talked about maybe calling some younger kids up and giving some at-bats to other people.Said Rodriguez: I know that the organization has a brighter future today than it did last week, and hopefully Im part of that equation. But if not, I can accept it very clearly. The Mets, meanwhile, will hope to unveil a revamped lineup Wednesday, when new right fielder Jay Bruce makes his second start for the club and Yoenis Cespedes is expected to return to action as the designated hitter in the American League ballpark. One of the things we told Jay is, look, youre not the savior, Mets manager Terry Collins said Tuesday afternoon. Youre a big, big piece. But tomorrow night, when we get Ces (Cespedes) back in there, Ill tell you what, thats going to be a unique-looking lineup with those big bats in the middle.Cespedes, who missed Sunday and Mondays games due to a right quad strain, delivered a pinch-hit RBI infield single during a four-run seventh inning off Masahiro Tanaka Tuesday. Bruce, whom the Mets acquired from the Cincinnati Reds on Monday, went 0-for-4 in his debut Tuesday.Bruce, who leads the National League with 80 RBI, admitted he was a bit jittery Tuesday and looked forward to relaxing a bit more on Wednesday. Its good to be a little nervous, Bruce said. I enjoyed it. Im going to get more and more comfortable, settle in here (and) make this home. ' ' '
