RALEIGH, N.C. -- A big comeback win has the Carolina Hurricanes on a three-game winning streak and a point-a-game pace for the season.Victor Rask had a goal and an assist in Carolinas three-goal third period as the Hurricanes rallied for a 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday night.Jeff Skinner and Teuvo Teravainen also scored for the Hurricanes (6-6-4) during their outburst over a 5-minute, 50-second span of third period. Ron Hainsey had two assists and Cam Ward stopped 31 shots. Its a big lift, Hainsey said of the comeback. Obviously we were outplayed through two (periods). We just had a hard time keeping much in their zone. Being able to claw one out in the third period -- maybe you dont deserve it the way the bulk of the game went, but its certainly something well take.Jeff Petry and Andrew Shaw scored for league-leading Montreal. Al Montoya finished with 15 saves.Montoya was playing in the building, now known as PNC Arena, which was the site of the 2004 draft in which he was the first-round pick by the New York Rangers. We played a really good road game, Monreal coach Michel Therrien said. Youre on the road and give up 18 shots, you usually win those types of hockey games. I think the effort was there. But you need puck luck, and we didnt have the puck luck they did.Montreal outshot Carolina 9-4 in a scoreless first period, and then had a 12-4 advantage in the second as they took a 1-0 lead.Petry scored with 5:41 left in the period as his shot from the right circle went into the open glove side of the net. The goal stood up after a Carolina coachs challenge for goalie interference, with the ruling that Hurricanes defenseman Noah Hanifin had checked Daniel Carr into Ward with the goalie falling off his skates.Skinner tied it at 3:12 of the third, redirecting Hainseys blast from the left point off his left skate and past Montoya glove side.Carolina then took the lead at 7:43, as Teravainen deflected Hainseys rocket from the high slot past Montoya. This is a good league, Carolina coach Bill Peters said. Theres not many nights when youre playing a team that isnt any good. And you have to have a healthy respect for everybody in the league. But if were beating good teams, thats got to put us in that category at some point. And it went to 3-1 at 9:02, as Rask scored on a wrister from the right circle on a centering pass from Elias Lindholm.Weve been having good goaltending, and its certainly always good to have that on your back, said Rask, who shares the team scoring lead with Skinner with seven goals and 14 points. And were scoring a lot of goals now. We didnt play our best in the beginning, but we stuck with our game plan. Were beating some of the best teams in the league now, and were feeling good.Shaw cut the margin to 3-2 with 4:31 left.Game notes The contest was the first of the teams three-game season series. IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Over the past two games, Iowa has looked nothing like the team that dominated the Big Ten West in 2015.The Hawkeyes (3-1) will look to re-assert themselves Saturday against Northwestern (1-3), but the loss of star wide receiver Matt VandeBerg wont be easy to overcome.VandeBerg is out indefinitely after injuring his right foot Monday in practice. VandeBerg, a senior, is the teams leader in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.Iowas offense hasnt been all that great anyway over the last two weeks, so losing its top outside threat stings. This is hardly a crisis stage. Were all really sorry that Matt got hurt, dont get me wrong, Im not minimizing that, but hey, were going to play. Weve got to play, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. The Hawkeyes were even more banged up heading into last years game against the Wildcats and left Evanston with a 40-10 win , one of their signature victories in coach Kirk Ferentzs 18 seasons.Northwestern doesnt look nearly as strong as it was around this time last year either. The Wildcats have already lost to Western Michigan, Illinois State and Nebraska -- all at home -- and will make their road debut on Saturday. Here are some of the key things to watch for as Iowa prepares to host its West rival:WILDCAT THREATSNorthwestern has yet to score more than 24 points in a game. But the Wildcats have some dangerous weapons, including senior wide receiver Austin Carr. He leads the Big Ten with 28 catches for 392 yards -- and had eight grabs for 108 yards and a touchdown in last weeks 24-13 loss to Nebraska . Junior running back Justin Jackson is on pace to become the first back in school history with three straight 1,000-yard seasons, and quarterback Clayton Thorson completed a career-high 24 passes last week after setting a personal best withh 320 yards the week before.ddddddddddddDOING IT WITH DEFENSEThe Hawkeyes defense hasnt been the problem. Iowa is allowing just 13.5 points per game and has held its two Power Five opponents, Iowa State and Rutgers, to just 10 combined points. Im really impressed with how hard theyre playing. Its Iowa. They do what they do and they do it well, Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said.ROAD TRIPThe most disappointing thing about Northwesterns surprisingly poor start is that all three of its losses came at Ryan Field. But the Wildcats were tough on the road in 2015, winning at Nebraska, Wisconsin and Duke. This will definitely be a great challenge and a huge first test ... youre not going to play in a tougher environment than Kinnick Stadium, Fitzgerald said.FUNKY SERIESThe common thread for this series is that, more often than not in recent years, the results were unexpected. Few thought Iowa would beat Northwestern by 30 points last year or 48-7 in Iowa City in 2014. But the Wildcats ended Iowas national title hopes by knocking out quarterback Ricky Stanzi in the first quarter of a 17-10 win in 2009, and they took the Hawkeyes out of Big Ten title contention with a 21-17 win in 2010.NOTABLESIowa once took 21 consecutive games from Northwestern prior to a Wildcats win in 1995, the year they went to the Rose Bowl. Northwestern is 10-9 against the Hawkeyes since then. ... Iowa running back Akrum Wadley has rushed for 310 yards and five touchdowns in just two games against the Wildcats. ... Northwestern and Iowa are averaging nearly identical yards per game, but the Hawkeyes are averaging 30.5 points while the Wildcats are at just 16.2---Online: www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
