Thomas Bjorn will captain Europe in the 2018 Ryder Cup in France. The 45-year-old Dane has been a vice-captain for four previous matches, including this years 17-11 defeat to the United States at Hazeltine. He also played in three Ryder Cups and twice finished runner-up in The Open.?Ryder Cup Europe confirmed on Tuesday morning Bjorn will become the first Scandinavian skipper of the team.Bjorn had been a firm favourite for the job, and appeared a shoo-in once Padraig Harrington said he wanted to play in the next match, at Le Golf National in Paris, rather than take on the captaincy. Its a huge honour for me to be named European captain for the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris, Bjorn told the official Ryder Cup website. This is one of the greatest days in my career.I studied a lot of captains as a player and as a vice-captain and always wondered what that feeling would be like to be the one leading out a team of 12 great players. Now its my turn to do just that and it is an exciting moment for me. I have lived and breathed the European Tour for so long, and now I will do the same with the Ryder Cup for the next two years. Im very much looking forward to taking on this task.?Bjorn was chosen by a five-man selection panel comprising the three most recent captains -- Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley and Jose Maria Olazabal -- as well as European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley and European Tour tournament committee member Henrik Stenson.Pelley said: Thomas has many wonderful characteristics which he will bring to the role of captain. Firstly, he is incredibly experienced having played in three winning Ryder Cup teams and having been a vice-captain four times. He also has commitment. We have seen that over the last nine years as tournament committee chairman, so we know as Ryder Cup captain he will have the same unwavering commitment. Thirdly, he has passion. Not only for this wonderful game, but for the European Tour and Team Europe and he wants the Ryder Cup to be the greatest sporting event it can be.?John Olerud Mariners Jersey . PAUL, Minn.Baths ambition of building a new stadium on the existing Recreation Ground site hinges on a hearing at which a small group of residents will attempt to foil their plans. The long-standing aim of creating a new 18,000-capacity stadium that keeps the club in the city centre reaches a critical point on October 20 when the charity that owns the land -- Bath Recreation Ground Trust -- meets those objecting to the proposal before a Charity Commission panel.A final decision is then expected two to four weeks later, at which stage Bath will know whether they have the green light to develop a multi-sport facility that will cost a minimum £20 million and potentially far more. There are three or four people who dont want it to happen who live nearby, but overwhelmingly the vast number of people want to see it happen, managing director Tarquin McDonald said. Its unfortunate that from a legal point of view its a dogs dinner of a site. Its complicated and that means there are all sorts of challenges that people can throw in the mix. This is the situation weve been in for a period of time now. The people objecting are not anti-Bath rugby, but theyre not Bath rugby ffans as such.dddddddddddd Theyre local people who have their reasons and we respect that. Its just such a shame that something that would benefit so many people, the sport and the city hasnt been able to go ahead. It is hoped that next months Charity Comission hearing will ratify a set of guidelines about how the site can be used and if this happens, a planning application will be drawn up in spring 2017 and with building potentially beginning in 2018.People in Bath see the club as part of the cultural lifeblood of the city. Its not just a museum town, rugby keeps it alive and fresh, McDonald said. We want to be rooted to the centre of Bath, its an important part of who we are. We want to know if its possible to develop at the Rec and if it isnt well have to look at other optionsIm hopeful and optimistic that the key hurdle in the next few months can be overcome. People in sport would love to see it happen because it is an iconic venue and to keep rugby in an amazing facility in the centre of the city would be brilliant. ' ' '
