EUGENE, Ore. -- Allyson Felix had the star power to change the Olympic schedule. Now, its her schedule that needs adjusting.Felixs run at the 200-400 Olympic double, made possible after Olympics officials honored her request for a chance to run both races, came to an earlier-than-expected end Sunday. She finished fourth in the 200-meter final, one spot out of the Rio mix, in a .01-second loss to a sprawling Jenna Prandini at the U.S. track and field trials.Honestly, disappointed, said Felix, who will not get a chance to defend her Olympic title in her signature event. The whole year, that has been what I was working for. When I look back and see everything that happened, I still think its quite amazing I was able to make the team. She did make the 400-meter lineup, and that is, indeed, quite an accomplishment considering the injury she suffered this spring. After landing awkwardly on an exercise ball while doing core work, she rolled her right ankle. The injury was so severe she avoided running around the track in the correct, counterclockwise direction until just before the trials, for fear shed put too much outside pressure on her injured ankle. In track lingo, a sprinter doesnt necessarily have to be fast to succeed in the 400 -- a full lap around the track in which technique is more important than pure speed. But in the 200, it takes a more aggressive lean into the curve at the opening of the race -- just the sort of practice Felix didnt get enough of during her slow comeback.I could only do what I could with the ankle, she said. And so, she started slow, never made up ground against winner Tori Bowie or second-place Deajah Stevens and could not hold off Prandini, the former University of Oregon star who had to wait about 30 seconds to see the result for third place go up on the board. Afterward, she was scraped up but smiling.I dont know what happened, Prandini said. But it got the job done. One of Felixs biggest fans made news earlier in the day: Sixteen-year-old Sydney McLaughlin became the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic track team since 1972 when she finished third in the 400-meter hurdles. Not bad for the junior out of Union Catholic High School in New Jersey, who tuned in to watch the Beijing Olympics eight years ago, saw Felix winning the 4x400 relay and thought, Id like to be like her, someday.Asked what she loved most about Felix, McLaughlin said: She wasnt afraid to lose.Sometimes, I get so caught up in the fact that I hadnt lost a hurdles race, and I come here, and these girls are faster than me, said McLaughlin, who admitted to being so nervous earlier in the week that she considered pulling out of the meet. Its realizing that sometimes you have to lose to get better. It happened to Felix plenty over the years, none more heartbreakingly than in Athens and Beijing, where she settled for back-to-back silvers in an event she had dominated. But she won gold in 2012.And with track and field -- and possibly NBC, as well -- desperate for some star power in a sport now headlined by Usain Bolt and a worldwide doping crisis, a scheduling change that would double the track time for one of Americas most popular runners was a no-brainer.But the U.S. trials dont guarantee anything, and on Sunday, a few more potential medal contenders -- including 400-meter hurdlers Johnny Dutch and Bershawn Jackson -- also saw some dreams end early.Felix is still going to Rio de Janeiro. But with more free time on her hands than originally planned.Im pretty sure everyone expected to see her on the [200] team, Bowie said. Im pretty sure it wont be the same without her.Christian Wood Jersey . All that matters to DJ Durkin is that Maryland is headed to a bowl game following a crazy up-and-down regular season.Ty Johnson ran for 168 yards, Teldrick Morgan returned a punt 83 yards for a score and the Terrapins became bowl eligible by beating Rutgers 31-13 Saturday. After losing four straight by a combined 191-49 score, Maryland (6-6, 3-6 Big Ten) took the lead for good in the opening minute and cruised to the finish. With its sixth win, the Terrapins salvaged a season that began with four straight victories and followed with six defeats in seven games. If we started the season 0-4 and then came on a tear and were on a 4-0 streak going into this game, it would be the greatest thing going, Durkin said. But it didnt happen that way. Were 6-6, and were eligible for a bowl game.Durkin arrived in December after serving as defensive coordinator at Michigan. Under his guidance, the Terrapins will play in a bowl game for only the fourth time since 2008.It feels great, Johnson said. Its a great opportunity for the program in general, going from 3-9 last year to bowl-eligible now. Its a big turnaround for us.Senior Day at Maryland began with a ceremony honoring the upperclassmen and ended with a loud celebration in the locker room.To see the happiness on their faces and to know their careers here just got extended and they get a postseason ballgame is great, Durkin said. It was about the seniors today. We made no bones about it. That was the message all week long.Rutgers (2-10, 0-9) finished its first year under Chris Ash with nine consecutive defeats. The Scarlet Knights were outscored 360-86 in Big 10 games.Weve got to improve in a lot of areas as we head into the offseason, Ash said. The Terrapins led 21-7 at halftime and finished with 318 yards rushing. Senior quarterback Perry Hills, who missed last weeks loss to Nebraska with a shoulder injury, returned to go 9 for 15 for 96 yards.Justin Goodwin rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown for Rutgers. Giovanni Rescigno completed 22 of 39 passes for 203 yarrds but was sacked seven times.ddddddddddddThe Scarlet Knights received poor play from their special teams, which allowed the long punt return, missed a field goal and botched an extra point.Thats an area weve got to get a lot better at, Ash said. It wasnt just today. All season.Maryland went up 7-0 when Kenneth Goins Jr. ran for 46-yard touchdown on the second play from scrimmage.Late in the quarter, Morgan fielded a punt and was hit immediately by Anthony Cioffi. The senior shrugged off the contact, worked his way toward the left sideline and raced into the end zone. That gave Maryland more points (14) than it totaled in its previous three games (13).Similarly, Rutgers scored its first touchdown in three weeks with 10:42 left in the second quarter. After Maryland jumped offside with the Scarlet Knights ready to punt, Robert Martin capped the 15-play drive with a 1-yard run.The Terps made it 21-7 on a 28-yard run by backup quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome, who lined up on the outside and took a handoff before weaving his way through the Rutgers defense.A 28-yard touchdown run by Goodwin got Rutgers to 21-13 in the third quarter. Johnson peeled off a 47-yard run on Marylands next play from scrimmage, setting up a 1-yard TD by Andrew Stefanelli.MARRY MEMaryland backup quarterback Caleb Rowe proposed to his girlfriend on the field after the game. She said yes.THE TAKEAWAYRutgers: If anyone had any doubt, it is now resoundingly clear: Rutgers is the worst team in the Big Ten.Maryland: The Terrapins are far better with Hills in the lineup. Maryland will bring a bit of momentum and a healthy starting quarterback into its first bowl game under Durkin, who will utilize the extra practice time in part to get a head start on next season.UP NEXTRutgers next plays Sept. 1, 2017, at home against Washington.Maryland awaits word on its bowl designation.---More AP college football at www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 ' ' '
